MDP Plus-R for Metal Detectors

SEARCH COIL TYPE MDP Plus-R for Metal Detectors

Sartorius metal detectors protect the consumer from damage to health,

the final product against metal contamination
and processing equipment against damage by undesirable metal pieces.
Metallic contaminants are displayed in all non or low-conductive materials.
The search coil of type MDP Plus-R in connection with a MDP Plus-E microprocessor-controlled evaluation electronics, was also developed with the highest detection sensitivity.

SPECIAL CARACTERISTIC
The search coil of type MDP Plus-R with considerably reduced or not required “metal-free zone”
depending on situation on site (see “METAL-FREE ZONE").

                        

STAINLESS STEEL CASING
All-welded stainless steel casing (material 1.4301) with tunnel-shape aperture available in different dimensions
(see table).

DETECTION SENSITIVITY
The high sensitivity of the detector meets the special requirements of many different industries.
Alloy steels and non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, aluminium, lead, etc.)
can be detected as well as ferrous magnetic materials.
MEASURING PRINCIPLE
The search coil produces a normally balanced alternating magnetic field; a metal piece passing it distorts this field.
The distortion is amplified in the electronics and produces a detection signal.

PRODUCT EFFECT
The measuring principle implies that magnetic properties or electric conductivity may limit
the maximum obtainable sensitivity.
In such cases it is recommended to send us representative samples of the product for testing.

SELECTION OF SEARCH COILS
APERTURE DIAMETER
The aperture depends on the diameter of the product to be inspected (e.g. plastic or textile rope)
or on the diameter of a pipe + a certain security distance.
No physical contact with the search channel is permitted. Choose the minimum necessary diameter.
Possible diameters see dimension “C” of the table (standard version).

DESIGNATION OF TYPE
Its contains the aperture diameter in cm.
Example: Type MDP Plus-R 17,2 - Aperture diameter = 172 mm

SHOCK ABSORBERS
To minimize the influence by conveyor vibrations and to insolate the search coil from the construction
it is fitted with 4 shock absorbers.
Depending on the situation on site these shock absorbers can be replaced by rigid insulating fixing (see mounting proposal).
The search coil is fixed to the support stand using this shock absorbers.
Centre distances see dimension “D” of the table (standard version).

SPECIAL VERSIONS

  • Search coils with flanges

      As option a search coil version with flanges on both sides is available (except MDP Plus-R 2,8).
      The product passes the search channel through an integrated guiding tube (diameter = C1).
      Stainless steel tubes of customer’s side (inner diameter = D2) can be flanged directly onto the search coil
      (see dimensional drawing and table “MDP Plus-R with connecting flanges”).

  • Search coils with air cooling

       For product temperature exceeding + 45° C an air-cooled version is available
       (except for MDP Plus-R 2,8 and MDP Plus-R with flanges).
       Air-cooling reduces the aperture diameter by 20 mm (dimension “C”).

  • Using the equipment in explosive atmospheres (ATEX 22)

The metal detector can be used in Zone 22 explosive areas (non-conductive dust) at an ambient temperature of max. + 40o C in accordance with the regulations of Directive 94/9/EC.
In this case the "Safety Instructions for the MDP Plus Metal Detector" must be observed.

CABLE CONNECTION
The search coil is provided with a 10 m cable for connecting with the electronics.
The cable may not be extended, but should be shortened to the required length.
The connection is made in accordance with the terminal diagram.

MOUNTING
The standard search coil is installed in electrically non conductive and non-magnetic pipe systems, chutes or troughs.
Care should be taken to ensure that the product and the pipe (chute or trough),
pass through the coil aperture without touching it.

INFLUENCES ON THE SEARCH COIL FIELD
Vibrating or moving metal parts, electric motors and associated power supply cables
may not be in close proximity of the search coil because they could influence the sensitivity.

METAL FREE ZONE
The “metal-free zone” (MZ) should always be as large as possible.
No vibrating or moving metal parts are permitted within the
“metal-free zone”.
The following is a rule of thumb for the minimum required
“metal-free zone” in direction of transport (MZ):
MZ = H + (1.6 x C)
Except for the MDP Plus-R-model with connecting flanges.
Where the “metal-free zone” cannot be observed as a result of
the space available on site, losses of sensitivity must be expected.

 

 

 

Mounting proposal 1
Example: Search coil MDP Plus-R in a back forming machine:
For metallic parts of aluminium or stainless steel (1.4301)
in the infeed zone e.g. weighing tray, tubes, flanges etc. moving
towards the search coil a “metal-free zone” (EZ) will be respected.
EZ = 1.5 x C
Metallic parts of aluminium or stainless steel (1.4301) in the infeed
zone and outfeed zone as tubes, flanges, plates etc. not moving
towards the search coil and having an equal or larger diameter than
the search coil may reach up to the collar of the search channel.
If the search coil is mounted onto the construction of the installation
(here aluminium or stainless steel) the shock absorbers are to be
replaced by rigid insulating fixings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mounting proposal 2
Example: Search coil MDP Plus-R with connecting flanges,
directly mounted in the feeding system:
The MDP Plus-R-model search coil with connecting flanges
can be integrated directly into pipe systems.
The product passes the search channel through an integrated
guiding tube.
Stainless steel tubes of customer’s side can be flanged directly
onto the search coil.
Make sure that the search coil will not be subject
to mechanical vibrations.
The search coil is fixed to the construction of the installation
using the shock absorbers.
